Walking Tour: Cherokee Park History and Olmsted’s Vision

Learn about the community impact on Cherokee Park design and function in relationship to Frederick Law Olmsted’s intentions for Cherokee Park. Without a doubt, Louisville residents have contributed greatly to the essence of Cherokee Park through generous contributions and much activity. Join Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s Certified Tour Guide Denise Davis to learn the origins of such features as the Christensen Fountain, the McCall Shelter, and Hogan Fountain, as well as two special bridges, and some elements no longer present – tennis courts, tourist camps and the most elegant country house in Louisville. You will also hear of Olmsted’s hope of making Cherokee Park one of the most beautiful parks in the US and why he stressed “scenery” so much.

Meeting Location: Christensen Fountain, near Rugby Field. Park in the gravel lot on the right side of the Scenic Loop just past the intersection of Cochran Hill Rd. The lot is across from what is known as Rugby Field.

Distance: 1 mile – along the paved Scenic Loop and natural trails that ascend and descend Bonnycastle Hill and Hogan Fountain area.

Tour Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a water bottle, meet 15 minutes prior to tour start. Feel free to bring a walking stick for walking up and down Bonnycastle Hill.
