Advocating for the historic Chickasaw Park

Back to News & Updates

In February, we celebrate Chickasaw Park during Black History Month by raising funds to restore the tennis courts! This is just one park project that is informed by our Outreach and Advocacy program.

Through outreach and advocacy work, we center community voices through feedback from park users, neighborhood groups and other key stakeholders on important park matters, allowing us to better understand and address community needs.

In addition to fundraising for Chickasaw Park’s courts, we have engaged in the following work for Chickasaw Park:

  • Hosted an on-line survey and conducted in-person surveys in the park: top results indicated desire for lodge and restroom improvements, tennis court renovations and pond restoration.
  • Engaged with groups such as Chickasaw Neighborhood Federation and WLTC
  • Used survey and engagement to inform project priorities.
  • Use results and letters of support to secure project funding.
  • Engage with partner organizations to increase positive activations in the park. Partner organizations include: Play Cousins Collective, Pets 4 Life, Ballet Bound, West Louisville Tennis Club.

Chickasaw Park is believed to be the only Olmsted designed park to be created for the Black community during park segregation. We are committed to honoring the history of the park and invite you to contact us if you want to be involved in our advocacy efforts!
