Big Rock Playground accessibility updates!

Back to News & Updates

The playground near Big Rock in Cherokee Park is now fully inclusive and accessible! Louisville Parks and Recreation and Olmsted Parks Conservancy was able to replace the surfacing, thanks to city funding and dollars raised from generous donors.

The playground’s surfacing was past its usable lifespan and was a combination of poured-in-place rubber and playground mulch. The mulch presented a barrier to those who use wheelchairs and walkers. Over the past few weeks, we installed new poured-in-place rubber over the entire playground footprint, eliminating the mulch altogether!

This project is the first phase within an overarching plan to restore and update the entire Big Rock area. We are grateful for the support of the Frances Alden Charitable Trust, the Cralle Foundation, the Trager Family Foundation, WHAS Crusade for Children, the William Barth Foundation and other private donors.
