History of Shelby Park

Shelby Park was named for the first governor of Kentucky, Isaac Shelby. It was designed in 1907 and is the only park in Louisville designed in conjunction with a Carnegie library. The Olmsted Firm designed the park during a time when sports and active recreation were popular considerations in park planning, marking a departure from Frederick Law Olmsted’s commitment to pastoral landscapes.
