Women’s History Month: Celebrating Enid Yandell

Back to News & Updates

Women’s History Month is a good time to reflect on the impact that sculptor Enid Yandell made on our Olmsted Park System. Yandell was a pioneering artist when sculpture was a male dominated field, and her work can be seen in Wayside Park (The Wheelman’s Bench,) and in Cherokee Park (Daniel Boone and Hogan’s Fountain.)

Before Yandell’s Boone statue was installed at the Eastern Parkway entrance of Cherokee Park, it represented Kentucky on a national stage. Yandell originally created the statue to be displayed in the Kentucky Building at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The piece was commissioned by what is now known as the Filson Historical Society. Yandell used Boone’s hunting shirt, rifle, tomahawk, knife and powder horn while shaping Boone’s likeness.

The Boone statue traveled around the country for years before businessman C.C. Bickel paid to have the statue cast in bronze and installed in Cherokee Park. Today, the Daniel Boone statue is a local landmark and a testament to Yandell’s talent.
